A simple idea that became
worldwide news

  • From one email

In April 2007, former football journalist Will Brooks launches a website called MyFootballClub. He emails the link to a group of friends.

  • Going viral

A week later, BBC Sport online picks up on the story and news of MyFootballClub spreads. Interview requests come in from around the world, and 53,000 register with the website.

  • Going global

Those joining from over 80 countries include around 3,000 from the USA, 600 from Australia & New Zealand, 1,000 from Scandinavia, and many thousands from mainland Europe and the UK.

  • Record-breaking fundraise

Membership fees are requested on 1 August. £250k is collected in 24 hours and £500K in 10 days. It’s Paypal’s fastest European launch and top 10 in the world.

  • Tale of two strikers

In July, members raise £20k to buy Michael Gash from Kettering Town. In August, they vote to approve the £140k sale of John Akinde to Bristol City.

  • 'Pick the team' controversy

It divides members and concerns existing supporters. A compromise is made that members decide before each match. They always vote for Daish to pick the team.

  • Ongoing losses

Monthly deficits in early 2009 are particularly large, and year one’s memberships fees are all but spent on buying the club, clearing debts and covering losses.

  • From 32K to 9K

in February 2009, £35 membership renewals are requested, 18 months on from when the majority joined. Membership falls to 9,000 which increases the financial strain on the club.

  • Downs & ups

In 2010 Ebbsfleet are relegated, but immediately win promotion back to the National League in 2011. In 2012, MyFootballClub’s last full season in control, the club finishes 14th.

  • Ownership relinquished

In April 2013, the remaining 1,000 members agree to relinquish their shares. A new owner takes over in May. MyFootballClub then sponsors Slough Town for several years up until 2020.
